Viracocha

Origins Of The Universe
The Incas believed that before anything was created all that
existed was a being called Viracocha Pachayachachi, which translates to “
Creator Of All Things”. Viracocha created a world without sun, stars or the moon
and everything was dark. He then created giant beings as well as humans made out
of clay and gave them the specific rules that there shall be no quarrelling on
the earth. As they disobeyed this rule Viracocha cursed all the beings on the
earth. Some were swallowed by the earth, some were swallowed by the sea and some
were turned into stone. He subsequently bought about a flood called uñu pachacuti that washed away all
remnants of the giants and humans alike. It was said to have rained for 60 days
and 60 nights.
After the great flood wiped out all remnants of existence
Viracocha preserved the lives of two human beings who he would call upon in his
time of need to help him. Out from the dark depths of Lake Titicaca Viracocha
bought eternal light to the new earth summoning the sun, moon and the stars.
Out of the old stones from the great flood Viracocha created new birds and
animals as well as human beings. Each human being he created had a distinctive
feature to them. Some women he painted as pregnant, some caring for their babies
beside them and on each figure he painted clothes that they would eventually
continue to wear. He also carved out on stone all the different nations and
tribes that he wanted to exist. Granting the stones different languages, food
and songs to sing, Viracocha divided these stones up into separate groups and
buried them in the earth to wait for their command of
summoning.
Viracocha summoned his two helpers and told them
to travel across the earth to awake those people who were lying deep in the
earth in caves, streams, rivers and waterfall. They informed these people that
their time had come to populate the land. Viracocha then sent one of his
servants to the east to a region called ‘Andesuyo’ and the other to the west to
a region called ‘Condesuyo’.They were sent there to awaken the people of this
region and inform them of the stories they have experienced. Viracocha disguised
as an old man then set out himself to the city of ‘Cuzco’. Along the way he came
across a province of Cacha and awoke the Canas people, who didn’t recognize
Viracocha and attacked him. In response to this Viracocha made a nearby
mountain  erupt and in seeing this
the Canas bowed down at his feet and he forgave
them.
When Viracocha founded the city of Cuzco he called forth those
who would be the lords of Cuzco. Once that was done, he walked across the sea,
awakening people along his journey. When he reached the ocean, he was greeted by
his two servants. Together they walked across the ocean and gave his inhabitants
one last word of advice “Beware of the false men who woud come and claim that
they were the returned Viracocha”.
